Winner of the Fleur de Cap Theatre Award for Best Performance in a Revue 2009

“…. Years of theatrical workouts with the Theatresports troupe have finely honed Fiona Du Plooy and Candice D’Arcy’s emceeing and comic techniques. Like skillful cowpokes on the rodeo circuit, they entertain while effortlessly corralling their quarry, in this case the audience, with whoops and humorous songs.

Director Peter Hayes has dressed the show flamboyantly and introduced in-your-seat square dancing; while Du Plooy’s energetic choreography distinguishes this work above the usual revue show…..’ BRENT MEERSMAN

Angels, Angels, Angels, where have you been all my years? the void in my klife has now been filled by your dulcet tones, wicked humour and glorious, glorious thighs. For this I thank you.

Angels on Horseback has been around for a couple of years, but this is the first time that I’ve managed to catch it. It’s billed as a country and western musical rodeo in good Ole Opry style but is so much more. It’s saucy, engaging, entertaining, strangely moving and funny as all heck.

Fiona Du Plooy and Candice D’Arcy, backed by musicians Jamie Jupiter and Gene Kierman, bust out a mixed set of original songs and covers.

These covers included country standards like Stand By Your Man, These Boots Were Made For Walking and the best cover of I Will Always Love You I’ve ever heard. they also try their hand at less likely covers of The Pussycat Doll’s Don’t Cha and Bruce Springsteen”s Dancing in the Dark.

But this is not a slavish boring tribute show. Even these covers are rejigged and polished into wholly new numbers and sparkle with charm and wit. Still, the big winners are the original compositions. Metro Boys, Ode to Ryk, Oh Johannes and Alkie are little nuggets of naughty goodness.

Du Plooy and D’Arcy are sassy, sexy performers.

They have decent voices and enliven the songs with great physical flourishes and keen comedic sense. They look gorgeous in their costumes from Hip-Hop Clothing as they square dance around the beautiful set.

Angels on Horseback would be best in front of a raucous (preferably slightly inebriated) crowd. It’s a hell of a good time that made me want to don a Stetson, cowboy boots and a peasant skirts as soon as I got home. Whether I did or not is nonce of your business.
